Indian Railways Extends Waiting Ticket Confirmation Timeline to 24 Hours
Delhi: Indian Railways has implemented a significant change to enhance passenger convenience. Passengers on the waiting list will now receive confirmation of their ticket status 24 hours before train departure, instead of just 4 hours. This move will particularly benefit those who need to finalize their travel plans in advance.
Pilot Project Launched in Bikaner Division
Dilip Kumar, Executive Director (Information and Publicity) of the Railway Board, stated that this pilot project has commenced in the Bikaner division. The train chart is now prepared 24 hours prior to departure, compared to the previous 4-hour timeframe. The initiative aims to provide passengers with advance notice of their waiting ticket status, enabling them to plan their journeys effectively.
Easier Travel Planning
Previously, passengers on the waiting list only received confirmation a few hours before departure, causing significant inconvenience in travel preparations. The 24-hour advance notice allows passengers to consider alternative options or make alternate bookings.
Railway Strategy and Passenger Response
The Ministry of Railways considers this a trial, its continuation depending on passenger feedback. If successful and beneficial to passengers, the system will be implemented across all railway divisions nationwide.
Existing Cancellation Policy Remains in Effect
However, the existing cancellation policy will still apply if a passenger cancels a confirmed ticket. Cancelling between 48 and 12 hours before departure will result in a 25% refund, while cancellation between 12 and 4 hours before departure will yield a 50% refund.
Therefore, while advance notification is advantageous, careful consideration is necessary to avoid financial losses due to cancellation.
No Changes to Booking System
Railway officials have clarified that the earlier chart preparation does not signify any major changes to the ticketing system. Remaining vacant seats will continue to be allocated under the existing booking system. The primary objective is solely to inform passengers of their confirmation status well in advance of their journey.
